There are many fun ways to learn math using physical movement, creativity, and fun. When you’ve used up your ideas for hopscotch, scavenger hunts, water balloon games and more, don’t forget to use all of your resources and count on math apps as well. Intentional and limited screen time can be an invaluable addition to your child’s education. Here are a few of the best math apps for your kindergarten-age child to learn their numbers and shapes while having fun.

Montessorium: Intro to Math

Designed to follow the Montessori method, Montessorium’s apps focus on developmentally appropriate tools that empower students to be in charge of their own learning process. Help your student learn their numbers, from symbols to sequences, and enjoy the clean design of this program. This app is best suited for children five and under. Watch your child learn how to draw each number as they trace the shapes!

Montessori Numberland

Available from Edoki Academy, this app follows the adventures of characters Tam and Tao as they interact with nature–and learn about numbers along the way. The app offers games in fourteen languages and is a great option for learning how to count multiple ways. In addition to teaching numbers 1-9, the app introduces the concept of zero. Consider downloading this app if your child is five or under.

Doodle Math: Shapes

Help your little one learn about triangles, squares, hexagons, and more with this option. Students draw, sort, and match shapes as they progress through the app; challenge their memory with the matching game. 3- to 5-year-olds will get the most from this option. Consider downloading others in the series if your child responds well, including the companion app, Doodle Math: Numbers.

Awesome Eats

Combine spatial and sorting lessons with learning about healthy eating as your child sorts fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. This app offers 64 levels, which will keep your child engaged for quite a bit of time, during which time they will also learn wholesome eating tips. Take the app lessons off-screen by preparing a healthy snack using the tips provided; include your child in the snack preparation to complete the lesson.

Moose Math

The creators of this fun math adventure, Duck Duck Moose, partnered with Khan Academy to bring the best educational resources to children everywhere, for free. Moose Math is best for 3- to 7-year olds and teaches a variety of math lessons, including counting up to one hundred. Addition, subtraction, geometry, and measurement are all covered; parents can review their child’s progress using the report card feature in-app.

Todo Telling Time

Designed for kids kindergarten through 2nd grade, this award-winning app teaches the concept of hours, minutes, schedules, and calendars. Users learn how to count numbers in fives, which prepares them for reading a clock, and the games feature trains, a Ferris wheel, and more.
